Periodontal Disease Treatment
Periodontal disease (also known as gum disease) is one of the most common health problems on the planet, as well as the leading cause of tooth loss among adults. This can happen because symptoms often seem small and benign in the earlier stages, only to quickly spiral out of control and cause lasting damage if the patient goes without treatment for too long. Dr. Gary Sherman and his team take the threat of periodontal disease extremely seriously, and we’ll make sure to identify its presence as soon as possible, providing revitalizing treatment as needed to ensure that your smile stays healthy and feels great. Contact our Garden City, NY practice today to schedule an appointment! We welcome new patients from all over Long Island and surrounding areas.
Periodontal Disease Treatment Options
Our recommendation for periodontal treatment will depend on the severity of your condition. Several options are available, including:
- In-depth hygiene and at-home maintenance – Our excellent hygienists Janet and Sandra can provide more frequent cleanings for patients with gingivitis (the mild form of periodontal disease), as well as instructions on how to effectively brush and floss at home. Early on, this may be enough to reverse any ill effects and help patients get back to enjoying stronger oral health.
- Scaling and root planing – When infection has spread to below the gum line, it’ll be time for our hygienists to take their care a step forward with this more involved cleaning. Scaling is the process of removing built-up plaque from under the gum line, while root planing is the smoothing of rough spots on tooth roots to prevent bacteria from gathering and growing in number.
- Antibiotic therapy – Antibiotic therapy can either be used in conjunction with scaling and root planing or on its own to help control the presence of dangerous bacteria in the patient’s mouth and prevent accumulation from reoccurring.
If surgical intervention is deemed necessary, Dr. Sherman can recommend you to a trusted nearby specialist for treatment.
